FOR RELEASE: February

(TROY,
MI) – The Troy
Historical Society is partnering with religious congregations in Troy to
provide a unique lecture series in 2011. Each monthly lecture will be held in a
different house of worship and will focus on the history of that congregation
and their role in building our community.
“Participants
will also have a wonderful opportunity to explore the architecture and
religious symbolism in each building,” Museum Manager Loraine Campbell said.
Thursday, Feb. 17: Northminster
Presbyterian Church
3633 W. Big Beaver Road
(between Coolidge & Adams)
In
response to the need to provide another Presbyterian Church in the rapidly
growing suburbs, Northminster was officially
organized in 1955, the same year that Troy became a city. MacKay Taylor, a
recent 27 year old seminary graduate was appointed the organizing pastor. Taylor, who served as pastor until 1992 will
speak at the program and will be joined by charter member Charles Amann, music director Beth Jones who is now serving for her
40th year, and current pastor Charlotte H. Sommers.
In
the late 1950’s, before he became known as a world renowned architect, Minoru
Yamasaki designed a large portion of the church.
“We
are very grateful to the Troy Historical Society for the opportunity to explain
our church’s history and our ongoing role in helping to build and serve this
wonderful community,” Charlotte Sommers added.
Reservations
are not required and lectures are free to all THS members. The Historical Society suggests a donation of
$5 for nonmembers. Presentations begin
at 7:30 pm and refreshments will be served.
