(TROY, MI) The Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities are partnering with the City of Troy’s Ethnic Issues Advisory Board, Community Affairs Department, the Troy Public Library and the Friends of the Troy Public Library to sponsor the Great Michigan Read.  This “Community Read” focuses on the novel “Stealing Buddha’s Dinner” by Bich Minh Nguyen.

The Community Read event is Thursday, January 14 at 7 pm at the Troy Community Center with a book discussion led by members of Troy’s Ethnic Issues Advisory Board.

Register to participate by sending an e-mail with your name, address and phone number to troyethnicity@yahoo.com.  A discounted hardcover book, Friends of the Troy Public Library cloth tote, a reader’s guide and a bookmark will be available for only $6 on a first-registered, first-served basis.

Walk-ins to the book discussion on January 14th are also welcome volunteers.

The Troy Community Read is made possible by a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council in conjunction with its “Great Michigan Read,” a book club for the entire state.  With a statewide focus on this single book it encourages Michiganians to learn more about their state, their history, and their society.  The book was selected by a group of nearly 50 librarians, teachers, students, professors, authors, and others from all corners of the state.

“Stealing Buddha’s Dinner” is a memoir that chronicles Bich Minh Nguyen’s migration from Vietnam in 1975 and coming of age in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the late 1980s.  Along the way, she struggles to construct her own cultural identity from a menagerie of uniquely American influences.

Copies of the book and reader’s guide are also available at Meijer, the Troy Public Library, or your favorite bookseller.
