Find Far Away Places Right in the City of Troy

 

(TROY, MI) – The snowy scenery doesn’t have to inhibit minds from traveling to far off places. Those visiting the Troy Public Library during the month of February will find a variety of programs that will take them to places like Africa, Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey and more. Experiences, including art and music, await library patrons of all ages. Activities include:

 

Artists on Display

Throughout February, see the works of acclaimed photographer William Cowger, who takes visitors “Out of Africa” with his inspiring shots of African nature and wildlife. Also on display will be the paintings of Sandra Gross and student art created in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. from Somerset Academy.

 

Chamber Music Festival

Sunday, February 8, 3 pm

Make time this February to attend the 9th annual collaboration with the young musicians from the DSO Civic Ensembles. Each year these performers provide one of the highlights of the Troy Public Library concert season with a variety of award-winning chamber music groups ranging from string quartets to piano trios and woodwind ensembles.

 

Far Away Places

February 17, 7 pm

Listen to fascinating travel accounts and see slide presentations by Lori Feret (Feb. 17). Rediscover a Detroit gem as Feret discusses the restored Book-Cadillac Hotel.

 

Urbanism and Public Art

Friday, February 20, noon-1 pm

This is a collaborative series with the Troy Chamber of Commerce and I/ACT - Image and Arts Council of Troy. Learn how Troy community leaders plan to improve Troy’s image in the business world and for our residents through art and culture. Bring a lunch. Coffee and cookies will be served.

    According to a report, based on findings in Dun & Bradstreet’s database, published by Americans for the Arts organization, Michigan Congressional District 9 is home to 2,316 arts-related businesses that employ 10,563 people. These art-centric businesses play an important role in building and sustaining economic vibrancy in the county. They employ people, spend money locally, generate government revenue, and are a cornerstone of tourism and economic development. Maria Hunciag, Troy Public Library Cultural Arts Coordinator, and guests will talk about these creative industries and the “Creative Class” in Troy and Oakland County.

 

Bulgarian Art Day

Sunday, February 22, 2 pm

Pianist Angelina Pashmakova and an American Trio will provide a recital of Bulgarian classical music and songs.
