Troy Nearing Peak-Hour Usage – Be Careful to Adhere to

Underground Sprinkler Restrictions to Keep Costs Down

(TROY, MI) – Especially during this extremely hot weather that we have experienced lately, Troy residents and business owners are asked to heed the Troy ordinance that limits the use of outdoor automatic underground sprinkler systems to between the hours of 11 pm and 5 am daily.  As of today, July 11 at 6 am, the City’s peak hour usage was extremely close to our limit.  Going over the limit of 38 million gallons will increase our water rates.

For the past two years of Troy’s ordinance aimed at restricting water use during peak hours, the results were very positive.  Troy water users were able to reduce the “peak-hour” usage of water better than any of the other communities in the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD) system.  As a result, Troy was able to negotiate a rate that is 15 percent lower than the average increase to the other DWSD communities.

“Troy has been used as the ‘Model City’ in many of the other 125 communities negotiating contracts with the DWSD,” Superintendant of Water & Sewer Rick Shepler said.  “There is only one caveat and that is that Troy must maintain the current peak-hour demands that have been negotiated in the water contract.  We encourage all of our residents and businesses to keep up the good work and persuade others to follow the ordinance.”
