(TROY,
MI) – The
16th Annual Food Fight on Big Beaver (and Beyond)
is Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 23. Area businesses, companies and individuals
are encouraged to donate to this food-drive program that benefits Gleaners
Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan.
Gleaners distributes to more than 400 agencies to help area families in
need.
Food collection bins will be placed in
City Hall at the east and west entrances (500 W. Big Beaver), the Troy Public
Library (510 W. Big Beaver) and the Troy Community Center (3179
Livernois).
As the third-oldest food bank in the United States,
Gleaners Community Food collects, warehouses, repacks and distributes 30
millions of pounds of food for some 430 local member agencies. These agencies
pick up food from Gleaners in convenient amounts for use in serving meals,
preparing food packages and stocking food pantries. Since 1977, Gleaners
Community Food Bank has grown from distributing just one or two million pounds
of food a year to over 30 million pounds annually, equivalent to over 65,000
meals per day.
Cash
donations will also be accepted for this food drive. Make checks payable to: Gleaners Community
Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan and mail to City of Troy Community Affairs
Department, 500 W. Big Beaver, Troy, MI 48084 or drop off checks or cash to
City Hall – Community Affairs Department on the second floor. All donations are tax deductible. Only non-perishable food items should be
