IRS and Troy Public Library Offer New Resources for
Small Business Owners and Self-Employed

(TROY, MI) – If you are a small business owner or self-employed, you probably have trouble finding accurate and timely information on a wide variety of government rules and regulations that affect how you run your business.

Well now, the IRS and the Troy Public Library have resources to help you.

The IRS has a new web site (www.irs.gov/smallbiz) – billed as a “Small Business and Self-Employed One-Stop Resource” – which include information on: starting a small business, hiring employees, setting up trusts, preparing for and paying taxes, and other topics. There is industry specific information and links to small business resources by state.

If you have never visited an IRS site before, be prepared for a lot of text. But the internal search box and the links make it fairly easy to navigate. Plus, all the information is free and accurate.

And if your small business is new, the IRS has created a Virtual Small Business Tax Workshop on DVD. This DVD – available free-of-charge from the Troy Library – includes 10 lessons on: what you need to know when you run your business out of your home; how to set up a retirement plan if you are a small business owner; how to withhold the right amount of taxes from your employees; how to work with contractors; and other important topics. To receive a copy of this DVD, contact John Robertson, Troy Public Library Technology Department, at j.robertson@troymi.gov or call 248.524.3548
