Troy Families Can Take Advantage of Great Free Entertainment this Summer

 

“Jazz on the Corridor” and “Music, Movies and Moonlight” Events are Perfect for Family Budget  
 

 

(TROY, MI) – Troy families watching their entertainment budgets this summer will want to make plans to attend several free, high-quality, family friendly events.  “Jazz on the Corridor” and “Music, Movies and Moonlight” return to Troy this summer, guaranteeing five wonderful evenings of terrific entertainment.

 

“Music, Movies and Moonlight”:

Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to Boulan Park and enjoy a great concert followed by a big screen movie, thanks to sponsor Flagstar Bank.  The returning “Music, Movies and Moonlight” will offer two separate Saturday evenings – July 25 and August 22 – of entertainment to enjoy.  Music will begin at

7 pm and the movies at dusk.  To help ensure everyone has plenty of munchies on hand, the Troy Community Coalition will run the concession stands.  All sales will benefit the Coalition.

 

Saturday, July 25:  “Kung Fu Panda” at Boulan Park.

Tom Butwin will provide music until dusk when the movie starts.  Having performed his own songs since the age of 15, this hometown musician will perform pop, rock and acoustic music.  The movie is rated PG.

Saturday, August 22:  “Enchanted” at Boulan Park.

The band “Mass Transit” will be featured, a seven-piece all-purpose band with over 25 years of entertainment experience playing Motown, rock ‘n’ roll, disco,  R&B and swing, followed by the movie.   This movie is rated PG.

“Jazz on the Corridor:”

The Columbia Center at 101 W. Big Beaver will be the backdrop for “Jazz on the Corridor,” -- fabulous music sponsored by the Troy Downtown Development Authority on select Thursdays this summer from 6:30-8:30 pm.  Bring lawn chairs or blankets, grab a bite to eat and relax with friends while listening to great music.  Gateway Deli will sell food items including barbeque hotdogs, chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, pop, munchies and ice cream.  The music lineup is:

 

Thursday, July 16: Persuasion, at the Columbia Center, 101 W. Big Beaver

One of the hottest bands in Metro Detroit, Persuasion brings high-energy music to every event. Persuasion changes musical styles in a heartbeat, covering Top 40, Classic Rock, Disco, Funk, Motown and more.  Persuasion has performed for the Big Dance Final 4 Weekend, has headlined on the National Stage of Arts Beats and Eats opening for 38 Special and Ziggy Marley and have been the band of choice for the "Toast of Hockeytown" Red Wing Charity benefit for the past seven years. Everyone loves the energy, audience interaction and charismatic stage presence of this dynamic nine-piece band.

 

Thursday, July 30:  Carl Cafagna & North Star Jazz, at the Columbia Center, 101 W. Big Beaver

Formed in the spring of 2004 by Detroit saxophonist Carl Cafagna, the North Star Jazz Sextet has quickly become a sensation, having performed at numerous jazz festivals, nightclubs and concert venues across Michigan and beyond. The group has found success with its hard-hitting, soulful and sophisticated modern sound.  All music is arranged for the three-horn format, which adds excitement and drama to a cast of stellar soloists. 

 

Thursday, August 13:  The Pros Big Band, at the Columbia Center, 101 W. Big Beaver

Well known in the Detroit area since the 1960s, this 17-piece big band features vocalist Debbie Gary and its repertoire includes classics and contemporary music from the big band era including Harry James, Count Bassie, Tommy Dorsey and Glen Miller.
