March is the Month for Health at Troy Community Center

 

(TROY, MI) Experts agree that it takes 21 days to break bad habits and form new ones. During the month of March the Troy Parks & Recreation Department is offering not just 21, but 30 days of special classes, activities, tips, and events to help promote healthy lifestyle choices.

 

“The ’30 Days to Health’ program in March is a perfect opportunity for individuals to re-spark those health-related resolutions that they made two months ago,” said Fitness Coordinator, John Hug. “This program offers a lot of bang for your buck by incorporating exercise classes, nutrition lessons, health seminars, outdoor activities and more into one month-long educational experience.”

 

The Troy Parks & Recreation Department has teamed up with REI, Team Mongo, the American Cancer Society, Whole Foods Market, and Drs. Justin Berlin and Christopher Passalacqua to offer a wide variety of health-related programming. The fee for this program is $10 and includes free passes every Friday for the Troy Community Center plus admissions to a variety of fitness classes and seminars. Classes and Seminars include:

 

Fitness Classes: Including Power Sculpt, Cardio Interval, the Core, Group Cycle, Cycle and Sculpt, and a fitness room orientation with a personal trainer.

Outdoor Clinic: Including Hiking America’s Southwest, Geocaching 101, Day Hiking in Michigan, and Bicycling Maintenance Essentials

Nutrition Seminars: Including Magic Whole Grains and ABC’s of Supplements and Healthy Aging.

Health Series: Including classes on diet, exercise and stress presented by Drs. Justin Berlin & Christopher Passalacqua.

 

The Community Center is also offering their popular Triathlon Clinic presented by Team Mongo on March 7, from 10 am-noon. This clinic explores the three disciplines of triathlon: swimming, biking and running and provides information and training tips for interested participants. Guest speakers include Team Mongo! Triathlon Team, American Cycle & Fitness, and Hanson’s Running Shop. This class is offered to all interested athletes for $5 if registered by March 6, $10 day of event. Free admission for “30 Days to Health” participants.

 

The calendar for March 1-7, the kick-off week for the “30 Days to Health” program, includes:

 

March 2: Cardio Interval at 9 a.m. This intermediate to advance level class alternates a variety of cardio work and muscle conditioning. Cardio segments may include step, Hi/lo, kick boxing, and or group cycle. Muscle conditioning may include use of hand weights, body bars or balls. Additional registration required.

 

March 3: Fitness Room Orientation with a Personal Trainer at 7 p.m. Take the guess work out of starting a new fitness program, a trainer will take you through the equipment and give valuable tips to help get you fit. Meet at Fitness Desk.

 

March 4: Power Sculpt at 10 a.m. Use controlled movements set to music to tone all major muscles. Hand weights, body bars and bands used to firm body, increase strength and improve muscle definition. Additional registration required.

 

March 5: Hiking America’s Southwest from 1-8:30 p.m. Presented by REI. Have you ever wanted to hike to the bottom of Arizona’s Grand Canyon, visit Zion or Bryce National Park, or discover a hidden slot canyon in Utah?  REI travel expert Phil Myers will give you all the information you need for a memorable adventure in America’s great southwest.  Learn how to plan your trip, receive suggestions on the must-sees, and gather information on unique side trips and lesser known areas to explore.

 

March 6: Free-For-All Fridays from 5:30 a.m. - 10:30 p.m. Free daily pass for 30 Days to Health program participants.  Check-in at Control Desk.

 

March 7: Triathlon Clinic from 10 a.m. – noon in Room 304 and 305.  This unique multi-sport clinic provides tips on nutrition and ideas on how to get started and/or improve performance in one or all three triathlon sports. Limited to the first 200 participants.  Cost $5 (free to 30 Days to Health participants.) if registered by March 6. $10 day of event.
