Steps to Cut Water Costs Pay Off for Troy Residents

Underground Sprinkler Restrictions Remain in Effect in Effort to Keep Costs Down

(TROY, MI) – As everyone readies themselves for the summer lawn maintenance routine, Troy residents and business owners are asked to heed the Troy ordinance that limits the use of outdoor automatic underground sprinkler systems to between the hours of 11 pm and 5 am daily.  Doing so will help to keep water costs lower.

After a two-year test of Troy’s ordinance aimed at restricting water use during peak hours, the results are in and are very positive.  Troy water users were able to reduce the “peak-hour” usage of water better than any of the other communities in the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD) system.

As a result, Troy has now been able to negotiate a rate that is 15 percent lower than the average increase to the other DWSD communities.  Troy water users will save approximately $1,000,000 per year for the next three years.

“Troy is now being used as the ‘Model City’ in many of the other 125 communities negotiating contracts with the DWSD,” Superintendant of Water & Sewer Rick Shepler said.  “There is only one caveat and that is that Troy must maintain the current peak-hour demands that have been negotiated in the water contract.  We encourage all of our residents and businesses to keep up the good work and persuade others to follow the ordinance.”
