(TROY, MI) – A wide range of great summer experiences
for kids of all ages are available this summer in Troy, allowing parents to
look new further than their own backyards for great fun at a great value.
Offerings from the Troy Museum &
Historic Village, the Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center, and Troy Parks and
Recreation include the following:
Troy Museum & Historic Village
A special experience offered each week
with no registration required. Admission
fees are $3 for adults, $2 for ages 6-17 and free for children 6 and under:
Grandparents Day:
Monday, June 21, 10 am-3:30 pm: History is sweeter—and more personal when
it is shared. Grandparents and grandchildren who visit together will receive a
small treat.
Plein Air Art: Tuesday, June 29, 10 am-3:30
pm: Bring your supplies and tools to the Village Green and be
inspired by the colors, gardens, and historic architecture.
Civil War Soldier:
Tuesday, July 6, 10 am-2 pm: Visit a Civil War campsite and meet a
soldier, see his tent, equipment, food, and learn about the Civil War life.
Garden Club Walk
“Artful Gardens” Boutique: Wednesday,
July 14, 9 am-7:30 pm: The Village Green is transformed into
an elegant boutique featuring art, nature-related, and vintage goods. No ticket
required to go shopping!
Meet an Explorer:
Tuesday, July 20, 10 am-2 pm: Before pioneers came, Michigan was
open for exploration. Hear stories of a British man’s life paddling the
waterways in the 1770s, and see his campsite and canoe.
Musical Picnic:
Wednesday, July 28, 11:30-12:30 pm: Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the
Village Green (or indoors in case of rain). Listen to well-loved family friendly songs
performed while you munch!
Blacksmithing Demo:
Thursday, August 5, 10 am-2 pm: Marvel at the power of fire and the
trained hand to transform iron into useful and beautiful objects. The blacksmiths will be working in the shop.
Fire Department Fun:
Thursday August 12, 10 am - 2 pm: Learn fire safety from a Troy fire fighter
(10-11:30am). Try wearing real fire
gear! Look over a restored 1940 vintage
fire truck, too.
Photography Day: Wednesday August 18, 10 am - 2 pm: With
shapes, colors, textures, and charm, the Historic Village is a dream set. Amateur photographers are welcome to come
capture great shots today.
Hands-on History: Tuesday August 24, 10 am - 2 pm: Find
out why school kids love visiting the Museum! Try making butter, combing wool, dipping
candles, printing a page, and playing with old-time toys.
Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center
June 4: Fascinating Fossils and Daring Dinosaurs,
Nature Center, 7-8 pm. A
high-energy program with award-winning paleontologist and author Joseph “PaleoJoe” Kchodl who will bring
dinosaurs to life for your family with a T. rex tooth, a Velociraptor skull, dinosaur puppets, and a variety of
amazing fossils. Registration
required. Ages
3-adult. Fee: $7; ($9 non-residents).
River Day 2010: Saturday, June 5, 9 am - 1 pm: Sponsored by REI, activities include river debris removal,
invasive plant removal and wood chipping the trails. To volunteer call the Nature Center at

Summer
Ecology Days: June 22- 25, 9 am-4 pm:
Give your child a spcial opportunity to study
the science of ecology. Every
adventure-filled day will include fun interactive games, activities and crafts
among the ponds, meadows, and trails of the Nature Center. Bring a sack lunch each day. Registration required. Ages 6-10. Fee:
$100; ($105 non-residents).
Outdoor
Skills Camp: Tuesday, June 29-July 2, 9
am-4 pm: Participate in many outdoor exploration
activities including fire building, campfire cooking, orienteering, geocaching, putting up a tent, building an emergency
shelter, making a survival kit, lashing, and more. Registration required. Ages 9-12. Fee:
$115; ($110 non-residents).
Preschool
Earth Explorers Camp: July 6-9,
9:30-11:30 am: Children will explore animals, pond life,
bugs, wildflowers and other wonders of nature.
They will make a nature book and receive a net and bug hotel. Registration required. Ages 4-5. Fee:
$50, ($55 non-residents).
River
Camp: July 27-30, 9 am-4 pm:
Activities will include pond dipping, water quality testing, and
studying the critters that depend on water such as frogs, turtles and salamanders. The camp culminates in discussing how human
use water and building boats to race down the Rouge River. Registration required. Ages 6-10. Fee:
$100, ($105 non-residents).
Nature
by Night: Bats!: Saturday, July 31, 8-9:30 pm:
Explore these flying mammals during this night-hike adventure and learn
what these bug-eating machines do for us.
Meander through the Nature Center trails to find bat houses in the dark
and see bats in action. Registration
required. Ages 5-adult; children must be
accompanied by an adult. Fee: $5, ($10 non-residents).
Stirring Up Science Camp: August 3-6, ages 5-7 from 9 am-12 pm and ages
8-10 from 1-4 pm: Kids get to dive in to amazing science
projects learning the secret formulas to concoctions like slime, putty, moonsand and soap.
They will grow crystals, make ice cream, build a UV detector and design
a pop bottle rocket. Registration
required. Fee: $119, ($124 non-residents).
Take
a Peek at the Pond: Friday, August 20,
10-11 am: Use one of our nets to catch and observe
animals living in the pond and then release them back into the pond. Children must be accompanied by an adult;
there is no charge for the adult.
Registration required. Ages 3-adult.
Fee: $5, ($10 non-residents).
Introduction
to Beekeeping: Saturday, August 21, 10-11:30
am: Celebrate National Honeybee Awareness Day by
learning about beekeeping. Learning how
to start a new hive or improve your beekeeping skills. Registration required. Ages 14-adult. Fee: $12,
($17 non-residents).
Little
Acorns: Friday, August 27, 10-11 am (for
ages 1-3) or 1-2 pm (for ages 3-4): Bring your little ones to come explore
the sights, smells and sounds of spring with an interactive hands-on hike
designed to help them grow with us in nature.
Fee: $5; ($10 non-residents).
Troy Parks and Recreation
Camp themes through Parks and
Recreation include: KIDS Camp, Survivor
Summer Camp Kids Style, “All That and Then Some…” Middle
School Summer Blast, Sportsters Camp, Backyard Explorers, Water Warriors and
new this year, The Amazing Race Camp.
All are offered as five-day camps and
some are available as four-day camps at various weeks throughout the summer. Registration to participate is required. Fees range from $105 to $175, depending upon
the camp, and run from 9 am-4 pm, Monday-Friday. The camps are licensed by the State of
Michigan and have the option of before and/or after care for additional fees.
