(TROY, MI) – The
City of Troy is rolling up their sleeves to assist seniors with pesky
technology problems that may be plaguing them. From Digital TV Converter Boxes
to Computers, various City programs are offering free help to our senior
residents.
Digital
TV Converter Boxes
With the TV transition looming ahead on February 17,
2009, seniors or people with disability who have purchased a digital TV
convertor box can contact The Senior Home Repair Program to help with the hook
up. If installation help is needed, please call 248.524.3484 and put in a
request for SHARP. Allow two weeks for SHARP to respond to your request.
Computer
Disk Erasure - Dec. 17
Troy SeniorNet provides a free computer
disk erasure service to help prevent identify theft for people throwing out or
giving their computer away. Deleting files does NOT erase the information. You
should destroy everything on the disk drive if you plan to throw the computer
out or destroy personal data but keep the operating system and installed
software if you plan to give your computer to someone else.
Volunteers are available on the third Wednesday from 10
am until noon to erase hard disk drives. Bring in your computer (just the
processing unit - not the monitor, keyboard, or mouse) or remove the hard drive
and bring it in. The process takes 6-8 hours so you will need to leave the hard
drive and pick it up a few days later. Appointments are not required.
Private
Computer Consultations - Dec. 3
Meet with a SeniorNet
instructor at the computer lab at the Community Center and get answers to your
questions about PC operation, Word, Internet, e-mail and more. Appointments are
45 minutes in length and are available on the first Wednesday of the month at
9:30, 10:15 or 11 a.m. If you use a laptop, bring it. Call 248.524.3484 by the
Monday before to schedule an appointment. There is no charge. Specify what you
need help with when you make your appointment.
The Troy Community Center is
located at 3179 Livernois. For more
information call 248.524.3484.
