Nature Center Gets Set to
“Unearth the Earth”
(TROY,
MI) – The Lloyd A.
Stage Nature Center is offering a new program to help young people discover the
rocks and fossils beneath their feet.
“Unearth the Earth” is offered Wednesday, February 18, from 10 am-noon.
Children, ages 8-12, will make and paint their very own fossil to
take home, “erupt” a volcano and also explore the
center’s new American Mastodon Discovery Dig Site.
“This is a
terrific activity during mid-winter break,” Nature Center Manager Stacey Yankee
said. “We will explore Michigan geology
in a truly fun way, giving the kids a hands-on feel for the common and unique
rocks, fossils, and minerals that make up the very ground we walk on.”
The
American Mastodon Discovery Dig consists of life-size Mastodon replica bones,
including a “crawl-through” rib cage, and several embedded fossils. Many large brushes are available for digging,
exploration and discovery.
Registration
required. The fee is $12 per child. The Nature Center is located at 6685 Coolidge
Highway in Troy. For more information,
call 248.524.3567.
