Election Inspectors - Tip of the Week
Weekly Information Regarding Election Protocols
Facing the record turnout that we will see and the possibility of lines at 7 am when the Polls open, I would like you to take a moment to be better prepared for the early morning rush. This material will let you know what to do once you arrive at the precinct at 6 am.
Although the implementation of the State of Michigan voter identification requirement in the City of Troy has proven to be successful over the course of the last three elections, this material serves as a refresher and reminder about how to evaluate proper photo identification and what steps must be taken if a voter is without his or her identification.
While we have had sensitivity training in the past, I feel that we cannot afford to miss this opportunity to refresh and enhance our training in this area. This Election will surely be a busy one. We will have people that have never voted in Troy. We will have those voters who only vote every four years and yes, we will have our seasoned voters. We need to be very conscious of our fellow citizens. AND be mindful of special needs they may have.
Our primary concern is that voters are afforded the opportunity to participate in this election with efficiency and accuracy. While we have had challengers in the precincts before, the City is not aware that there has ever been an actual challenge to the eligibility of a voter or the voting process. Inspectors should be prepared in case this occurs.
You will most likely be experiencing situations where we will be required to issue Provisional (Envelope) Ballots. The Poll Worker Video from Oakland County gave a good overview of Provisional Envelope) Ballot issuing. Building from that video and fully reading the following instructions, should give you enough information to work your way through the procedure when needed.
Election workers will most likely be experiencing various scenarios throughout the day, including voters with codes listed next to their name. This material outlines possible cases and includes the procedures that must follow.
The State of Michigan has 5 videos on their Web site which will provide you with a great refresher and additional instruction directly related to the AutoMARK. These videos demonstrate the use of the AutoMARK Voter Assist Terminal on Election Day. The AutoMARK is designed for use by voters with disabilities, but may be used by any voter, at his or her request. In this video, you will learn how to set up the AutoMARK, test it, mark a ballot, troubleshoot any problems that arise, and take the AutoMARK down at the end of the day. This video is broken into individual segments for easier viewing. In addition to the AutoMARK videos, there is a ballot marking instruction video as well as a couple of other informational videos on our election equipment.
After facing the record turnout and probably being a bit tired from the day’s events, you will want to go home to enjoy your PJ’s and pillow. To help you get there as fast and efficiently as you can, we are sending you everything you need to know to quickly close out your precinct without error.
