How often do I have to cut my grass?
Lawn grass and weeds must not exceed 10 inches in height. Cutting tall lawns and grasses located between private property lines and roads is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. This includes areas between fences and roads. It also includes areas between sidewalks and roads. For example, if a fence in the back yard separates the property from the road, the property owner should maintain grass on both sides of the fence, up to the edge of the road. Ornamental plants and grasses, and dedicated preservation areas are exempt from the cutting requirement. The full lawn and grass maintenance ordinance can be viewed here.

How early can I put my garbage out for pick up?
Garbage, recyclables, and recyclable yard waste should be placed at the curb no sooner than 5 pm on the preceding day. Containers should be removed as soon as possible, but no later than 24 hours after pickup. Collection starts at 7 am on your trash day. Empty containers shall be removed from the curb within 24 hours after trash pickup. More information regarding curbside collection can be found here. You may view the City Code here.
Can I store a recreational vehicle outside on my residential property?
In residentially zoned districts, recreational vehicles can be stored anywhere on the property for up to a 48 hour period. At all other times, recreational vehicles and equipment must be stored inside a completely enclosed building or located behind the front face of the house, and no closer than 3 feet from the side or rear property line. Recreational vehicles cannot be stored or parked on vacant lots. You may view the City Code here.
Can I park my commercial vehicle in my residential neighborhood?
In a one family-zoned area, one commercial vehicle is allowed on private property if it is a pickup truck or a passenger/cargo style van. Other types of commercial vehicles, trucks and equipment are permitted on private property provided they are actively performing a service related to the property (construction activity, delivery vehicles, etc.). How long can I park a commercial vehicle in the street?
Commercial vehicles, trucks, or trailers shall not be parked on any residential street for more than one hour. If the vehicles are servicing adjacent residences, they may be parked only for such period as is necessary to complete the service. You may view the City Code here.
Who is responsible for shoveling the snow on the sidewalk adjacent to my property?
The building occupant is responsible for removing accumulations of snow and ice from adjacent public sidewalks. If the snow or ice stops falling during daylight hours, snow or ice should be cleared from the sidewalks within twelve (12) hours after. When snow or ice shall stops falling during the nighttime, it shall be cleared from the sidewalks by 6 pm of the day following. The property owner is responsible for removing snow from vacant or unoccupied property. If you are going away for a period of time, please make arrangements to have your sidewalks cleared while you are gone.

Can I put out signs advertising my garage sale?
Garage/yard sale signs are allowed on private property subject to certain limitations, which can be viewed here. Signs that are placed in the public right-of-way (City property) will be removed by the City. Please check the regulations before displaying your sign. The entire City Sign Code can be found here.

Open House/House For Sale signs are allowed on private property subject to certain limitations, which can be viewed here. Can I operate a business out of my residence?
Home businesses (the City Code calls them Home Occupations) are allowed in One- and Two-Family residential districts subject to certain regulations. You may view the City Code here. Before starting any home business, we suggest you contact the Building Inspection Division to discuss your proposal.
How many days can I keep my inoperable car parked outside on my property?
Motor vehicles parked or stored outside shall not be unlicensed or in a non-operating condition for a period exceeding 14 days. You may view the City Code here.
