Old Troy Church

1837

Old Troy Church

This simple clapboard church of post and beam construction was built in 1837 at Troy Corners. Pioneer Johnson Niles sold the land to the Episcopal Church for $1.00. The church was conveyed to the Methodist Episcopal community in 1862 and served as their house of worship until 1963. The stained glass windows were installed around 1900. All the windows, except the half round over the door and the window in the southeast corner are original. Four bear the names of pioneer families who purchased them for the church. The pews are replicas of the original pews in the Big Beaver Methodist Church also built in the 1800s. The interior was arranged diagonally until 1948. The original church bell hangs in the present Methodist church. The Historical Society purchased a vintage 22-inch cast iron bell for the steeple.
